Fernando Piñero González is native to Carolina, PR. He studied mathematics at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras and studied his Ph.D. at the Technical University of Denmark. Fernando joined the University of Puerto Rico in Ponce. His current professional interests include Coding Theory and applications of Mathematics to Biology. His current personal interests include roller skating and yoga.

Fernando's biggest contribution to mentoring is running a math research REU from 2019 to 2026. The REU leadership team selected research projects in Coding Theory which are very accessible to students with a minimal background in mathematics. The projects have resulted in three published articles with REU participants. Participants under the supervision of Anant Godbole and Pamela Harris have also published several articles with REU participants too.
